i picked up some weck canning jars at heath to make some onion jam. luckily, there were some extra jars so the next project was candying some orange and lemon peels. i do imagine there will be a repeat performance of these lil' guys with some different spice variations. cardamon has been on the top of my list this season making cameos in peach pie, pear cake, persimmon cake and these here peels.

bounty from the foray dans le foret des champignons! scottie and i headed up to the hills for some mushroom foraging. we found some delightful chanterelles. i must admit the cleaning was rather arduous, but the results were delicious. they were the highlight in a fettucine pasta with garlic and spinach. cream tied it all together, mmm.

the hallway: bright pink patchy patchy turned into a red cave. we did quite a number on retexturing this ceiling smooth. if our kids have cloudy lungs, i think we can blame this hallway, but it looks damn good! so many hands were involved in this tiny space...nancy, landon, javi, dwood, juju and of course us'ns!

so the story goes: when willie moved into his grandparents' house, he tore out the bathroom. he pulled everything out but he liked the mint green tub and toilet so he put those back and put in a new bamboo floor. meanwhile, he let javi stay with him while he was tiling the tub area. once that was done, javi was kicked out and mu moved in. during mu's tenure, there was no sink in the bathroom, so once he moved out, the idea was to finish the bathroom-but we decided to just take on the whole house...why not?

renovating the house took about 3 months of weekends, post-work work to get to a good point. we still have some minor projects, but here are some before and afters!

la cucina- when we started prepping the walls, we realized that there were a couple layers of paint over wallpaper, so once we peeled that off, some original stenciling was revealed.

so there, some pics from the ole' confederacy. what an adventure, bama was filled with towns that seemed trapped in their civil rights shackles and didn't know how to move forward. selma, montgomery, rural central bama was filled with empty storefronts, water towers, and hardly any pedestrians. the peeps we met were super nice, we even holed up in a mexican restaurant that had folk singing country songs on their karaoke setup. it was quite the hit establishment in greensboro. we heard a lecture at rural studios by michael berk that was pretty neat. he is working on housing alternatives for post katrina folk that's cheap, fast, and green. that was the night before the storm. rain was colliding down, wind was whipping. i was half expecting the car to be on the other side of the field with the cows that morning. luckily we were all safe in newbern. allora, the pics are there, lots of eats, cuz you know i can't have an empty stomach or mama gets crazy!

so i'm back in the bay and happy to have completed a lot of work. sfortunatamente most of it was lost...airline error, poopsicles. i am crossing my stumps that they'll be back in my arms soon. pics to follow.

ahh, penlandia. so quiet there this winter, so many stars, luxurious studio! pretty much everyday save a sickly day or two writhing on me bed and a day when ethel dropped in (replete with cerveza) and we managed some asian food were spent in the new letterpress studio. my teacher frank brannon helped me realize some of the floating ideas in me noggin. i'm pretty darn pleased with my book and i'll be darn ecstatic when my bag is found...

what a month! i found out i was accepted to a letterpress residency at the penland school of crafts for the month of january! i'm super amped to work on a couple projects i've been contemplating. one is a book of tools the other will be altars to bacteria. talking with folk about bacteria to consider, bookbinding, and doing research has been awesome.

in other news, a few friends and i launched a design + build business called studio 247b. we're out in point richmond and looking to take your money! right now we've got a couple gigs for the lindsey wildlife museum in walnut creek and we finished up a reception desk for maru salon. some pics from our lil shopwarming.

can nebula explode? i don't really know, but Amanda Hughen's "Disparate Classification " sure seems about to go there. i was down at the johansson projects and saw these beautes along with some wooden sculptures evoking tubas, starbursts and futuristic barbells. alas, the geometry along with the freehand painting really makes me want to dive into this bacteria project i've been pondering. big, multi-layered microscopic level buggas. or on cloth or leather and sewn up into 3d objets. perhaps a hand...or tree stump...more pondering.

mr. chayablahblahsillupsin forwarded me this link to truck furniture, a japanese enterprise. i love these iron nails. iron nails are making a comeback. i found some awesome old railroad tie nails numbered and everthang that i want to incorporate into some sort of drawer unit. truck also has some library inspired pieces that are swaying my stiff librarian hips. maybe the next deco move is to make my space a biblioteca. replete with card catalog. spot gave my dorky bum a library card set to keep track of my minimal stash. i can't wait to geek out, toss my spectacles to the sky and rip my prim cardigan to shreds. oh my!

to the left of the manzanita twigs lies an oiseau that hannah made about 5 years back...ok, more like 7 years back. yesterday, a friend came by and asked how old the artist was of said bird. he thought maybe it was the work of a 7 year old. pshaw! she is the owner of her own business and i think her ability to make her work appear as free and loose as a wee one is inspiring indeed.

on another winged note, our neighbor kate introduced us to my new favorite: bird muffin horse. if you love giving people arbitrary identifications like me, this'll keep you entertained for years. basically you determine what combination of the three that fits a specific person. the example was given that john kerry=triple horse, i say feist is bird bird horse. try it on for size, you may like it.

i'm not quite sure what this place is, art studio, home office, grow room, milk house?!?! confounding. i googled it and everthang. it's on the corner of claremont and vicente under the 24 and i love the ironwork, woodsiding, and milky windows. the flat dandelions are my fave (ok, maybe they're not tampopo related at all, but they are fun little spankers). the sign on the door says "appointment only-deliveries and pickups in the back." maybe one day i will peer into "the back" and see if there is any sign or person that could point me to the inner-workings of said edifice. till then, any notions?

so i was helping out miss hansel from basel at the sfigf last weekend and met teri dimalanta. hannah was talking her up even before i met this wunderfraulein. one day i stumbled upon teri's hairclips in berkeley and was oohing and ahhing to the bf about them. they're felted, colorful, and simply adorable. she has a fruit series, some animals and flowers. i hella heart and am aching for the baby beluga.

en route to boonville, these redwoods ushered us into the other northern california wine valley. the landscape was beautiful, lush hills, grapevines, redwoods, oaks, manzanitas. but man, this is a lot of felled trees. the stacks of 2x's were even more prolific. guess lots of folk are getting decks, planter boxes, picnic tables and benches soon...

i took a great course with ellen babcock at cca last weekend and made these pewter castings. so excited to work with me hands. kind of rudimentary, but so fun. the weight is amazing, these puppies weigh in at about 5.3 ounces a piece. one of 'em has the blackening agent smeared over it, but i kind of like the subtlety of the untarnished ones. there's one stuck in the mold that is a kind of jack in the box for friends. some buttons appearing soon too. we made water clay negatives, wax positives, oil clay positives, plaster molds and hi-YA, poured some plaster in there to get...voila!

i haven't perused the entire list, but mi amiga deanna gibbons is featured here. she's a fantastic milliner and the other day hans, spot and i visited her studio where ginny and her were working and it is so inspiring. beautiful hats, all the hat forms lined up on the back wall, sewing machines, findings, and just great energy. congrats to hannah who just got an order from barney's! spot and i tried on a myriad of hats while deanna and hannah chatted about business. check out the list: http://www.sanfran.com/best_of_the_bay/best_of_the_bay/1

so i'm sure it's juju's influence, but aren't hooks fantastic? i love how no extra hardware is required, no folding, no lumpy messes on the floor. these hooks from inno are the best. i've been contemplating coat rack ideas for awhile now and these have no footprint, err, i mean tree trunk. love love love

so i was at john and usanee's and they have painted the table with blackboard paint! i hope putting plates on it doesn't mar the surface, but it looks great!
